Step-by-step: pluck your own eyebrows

Do you want to pluck your own eyebrows and be well prepared before doing so? In this blog we have listed all the tips & tricks in a handy step-by-step plan so you can’t go wrong! Plucking your own eyebrows is not that difficult, but we are happy to help you find the right eyebrow shape, inform you about the right care and how eyebrow make-up can be that final touch you’ve been looking for. Keep on reading…

What do you need?

Before you can get started on your eyebrows make sure you are not in a rush. Plucking your eyebrows requires patience and, above all, time. Please take our advice and make sure not to pluck your eyebrows in a hurry, especially if you’re doing it for the first time. It’s important that you get rid of the unwanted hairs with attention and patience because nothing is worse than accidentally removing too many hairs or having to leave the house with asymmetric eyebrows… The good news is that it will grow back, it may just take a week or two. So, take your time!

The essentials for plucking your eyebrows yourself are:

  1. A mirror
  2. Facial cleansing lotion or soap
  3. Tweezers
  4. Eyebrow pencil or Eyebrow Powder
  5. Disinfectant Gel
  6. If you have sensitive skin, an ice cube can be useful to temporarily numb the skin.
  7. Difficulty determining your eyebrow shape? Use an eyebrow stencil
  8. Time and patience!

Tip 1: Pluck your eyebrows after showering. The heat of the water causes the capillaries to expand, making it easier for the hairs to release and, the best part, it’s less painful!

Tip 2: Pluck your brows before going to bed. The skin around your eyebrows can turn red and we strongly advise against covering the redness with foundation or concealer for the first 12 hours. A night’s sleep often gives the skin enough rest for a beautiful result in the morning.

Have everything you need? Then it’s time to achieve the perfect brow in just 4 simple steps!

1. Finding your eyebrow shape

Before you start plucking your eyebrows, it’s important to determine the right shape.  If you have a clear shape already, proceed to step 2.

Does your eyebrow require some (re)shaping and is it difficult to determine which shape? Herome has developed four eyebrow stencils that can help you determine the perfect shape. There are four different ones, so there will always be one that fits the shape of your face.

In addition to the template, we have the following rules of thumb when determining the shape:

  • Determine the beginning of your eyebrow:

Grab a ruler and hold it straight up past your nostrils. Where the ruler touches your eyebrow is the beginning of your eyebrow. Remove the hairs between your eyebrows.

  • The arch of your eyebrow is determined by holding the ruler upwards from the nostril, past your pupil. Where the ruler touches the eyebrow is the perfect place to create the eyebrow arch. Note: not every face and eyebrow needs an arch.

2. Draw the eyebrow shape before removing the hairs

Do you have a clear picture of what shape your brow should be? The next step is drawing the eyebrows. This way you create a frame, and you know exactly which hairs should be removed, it’s as easy as that. Use one of Herome’s eyebrow pencil’s to draw your eyebrows as the sharp point allows you to create more precise lines.

3. Pluck!

Time to finally start! Inhale and let those tweezers do the work. First of all, it is important that the tweezers are clean to prevent infections so clean them in advance with, for example, the Herome Disinfect Spray. We recommend starting with the hairs between your eyebrows and then the hairs under your eyebrow. Be careful when plucking the top of your eyebrows. You don’t want to create any bald patches!

Hold the tweezers in your right hand and tighten the skin by pulling your skin to the side with your left thumb and index finger. Grab the hair as close to the skin as possible and pull it out in the direction of hair growth. Too painful? You can numb the skin beforehand or afterwards with an ice cube.

4. Disinfect and care for your eyebrows

You did it! You now (hopefully) have the perfect brow! To prevent infections and inflammations, we recommend you to thoroughly disinfect and clean your skin with a facial cleansing lotion or Herome’s Disinfect Spray. We know it’s tempting, but we advise not to use make-up for the next 12 hours and especially not to use concealer or foundation to cover the redness.

Finishing Touch

Your eyebrows are in great shape, but how about giving them that extra volume by colouring them in with an eyebrow pencil’ or eyebrow powder? Are your eyebrow hairs a bit wild and unorganised? Use Herome’s fantastic eyebrow gel to keep them in place. The gel is available in different colours and strengths so that they keep your shape whilst also giving the brows that extra colour boost.
